The Catalyst

general info

The Catalyst is a weekly independent newspaper produced and managed exclusively by the students of Colorado College. Published for the benefit of the college community and the surrounding local area, the Catalyst aims to bring general interest and academic-oriented news, ideas, and opinions into greater collective view—to act as a catalyst for informed debate.

working for the catalyst

The Catalyst is always hiring new writers. Students of all grades and skill levels are welcome to write for any of our five sections: News, Sports, Active Life, Life, and Opinion. We also often have open positions for photographers. If you are interested in working for the paper or if you have any questions, please contact zlloyd@oloradocollege.edu and e_mcdermott@coloradocollege.edu.

Cipher

Cipher is the college’s literary magazine, featuring narrative journalism, creative non-fiction, personal memoirs, and one fiction piece per issue, with art pieces developed by campus artists to visually represent its stories. Cipher issues are published every other block and generally have a one-word theme meant to inspire art and article ideas.

how to write for cipher

1. Have an idea
2. Reach out to an editor and tell them about your idea
3. Megan will pair you with an editor
4. You meet with the editor to talk about your idea and outline next steps
5. Write, edit, write, edit, write, edit
6. Publication! Editors will comb over the details and put it in the magazine.

things to know

—The theme is intended as inspiration, not as a strict rule.
—Articles don’t have to fit the theme. You can start the writing process at any time. It usually takes one block, but sometimes shorter, and sometimes longer.
—Writing for Cipher once does not bind you to ever write again if you don’t want to.
—You can submit something you’ve already written, but it will almost certainly still go through editing.
—There are almost no content parameters to Cipher, but sometimes we do try to steer writers away from certain ideas we think wouldn’t work.
—Why all this editing? We believe good writing is produced collaboratively, and requires a lot of revision. Plus, it involves more people, so it’s more fun.

Art

If you’re on our artist email list our art editor will send out an email every block once we know more or less which articles we’ll be publishing. We also welcome stand-alone art submissions, especially if they fit the theme.

events

—Open brainstorm sessions for upcoming themes, every First Tuesday in Sacred Grounds (the side of Shove Chapel)
—Release parties every third Friday (they’re amazing)
—Mid-block workshops, a low-key space to hang out with Cipher writers and editors and work on your article, art, or just bounce ideas around

Email l_kramarsky@coloradocollege.edu and a_wollinka@coloradocollege.edu with any questions or to be added to Cipher’s email list.

The Leviathan

general info

The Leviathan is a magazine that features visual art, fiction, and poetry created by Colorado College students. It is released four times per academic year, in alternating blocks. Leviathan has open submissions, and welcomes all artwork: photography, fiber, sculpture, pottery, etc., poetry, and prose. Leviathan accepts submissions in languages other than English but encourage them to be accompanied by a translation.

Events

Leviathan hosts writing workshops throughout the year to provide student-writers space to work on pieces while receiving feedback from other interested students. This is a great opportunity for students to improve their writing skills. We also organize a campus-wide event, Leviathan Live. This bi-annual gathering is held during fourth and eighth blocks and brings the CC community together to celebrate the artists and writers who have been published in the magazine. With visual art on display and poetry and prose read aloud, the magazine comes alive for an afternoon.

Contact Leviathan with submissions or questions at leviathan.magazine@gmail.com

Anamnesis

General info

Anamnesis is a student-run journal publishing undergraduate essays in philosophy. Students across all disciplines are encouraged to submit, so long as their essays grapple with philosophical issues. Anamnesis seeks to give undergraduates the opportunity to share academic writing with a larger readership and to engage readers in meaningful conversation through philosophically grounded papers. In contrast to highly specialized graduate-level philosophy journals, we hope to publish accessible yet rigorous contributions to the discipline.

Please contact anamnesis@coloradocollege.edu to get involved or with any questions.
